Majority of Accidents Involving Teens through Distracted Driving
Did
you know that distracted driving is the lead cause of car accidents in
US alone? In 2016, 3,610 people were killed while almost 400,000 were
injured in a motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers.
To make things worse, 6/10 teens involved in a car accident were "distracted drivers".
This
is a serious problem, as many of these teens put themselves and other
drivers on the road in danger. Here are ways to prevent an accident, and
be a better driver.
Understand the distractions
While
driving, your focus should be on the road alone. You become a part of a
large traffic, and you have to pay attention to every detail. Whether
it is traffic lights, the number of cars in front of you, the speed at
which you are travelling, your current fuel level, current road
conditions or any other aspect of driving, you have to be 100% focused
in order to prevent an accident from happening.
Keep your phone in your pocket while driving
70% of all Car Accident in Los Angeles
occurred because of distracted drivers. Some were texting while
driving, others using their phone to do other things such as play video
games, check their work schedule, browse the web or make a call.
You
should never use your phone while driving. It removes the focus from
the road ahead, and causing an injury is never easier. This is the point
where you are the most vulnerable while driving. All it takes is that
one mistake, and things will never be the same.
Be aware of drivers around you
Even
if you are 100% focused on the road, there may always be distracted
drivers around you. Pay attention to them, and drive with caution,
especially while driving at high speed. They may lose the grip of their
wheel, or start switching lanes unexpectedly. Give yourself the space
you need to maneuver your car, and protect yourself and those inside
your car from distracted drivers.
Use
your car horn to warn the driver and help him regain focus. Even though
he may start yelling at you for honking at him, you may have just saved
his life!
What are the consequences?
The
worst possible outcome is death. All it takes is one moment, and bam,
you are gone. Even if you survive the crash, someone else in your car or
in the opposite car may die. Or even a pedestrian may die. The point
is, it is so easy to lose a life in a car accident.
Other
consequences of car accident involve serious and life changing
injuries, inability to work, move, speak, see, loss of limb, etc.
Bottom
line is that there is no good from getting involved in a car accident.
Nothing is worth risking your life, or the life of someone you love or
care for. Drive safely, pat attention to the road, and since you already
assumed the role of a responsible driver, act like it.
